VideoGLOSSARY

NDI — Network Device Interface

01 — Definition

NewTek/Vizrt's video-over-IP protocol. Two profiles: NDI High Bandwidth, lightly compressed (SpeedHQ codec, visually lossless at ~10:1 — NOT uncompressed; genuinely uncompressed 1080p60 is ~3 Gbps), ~120 Mbps per stream, ~1 frame of latency (8–16 ms); and NDI HX3, more heavily compressed, ~20 Mbps per stream. Gigabit Ethernet is the minimum, and a 10 GbE backbone is recommended beyond 4 simultaneous High Bandwidth streams.

02 — In the field

NDI and Dante compete for bandwidth on the same network. Separate them onto different VLANs or dedicated switches. A 1 GbE switch shared between 3 NDI High BW streams and a 32-channel Dante network will end up spitting out dropouts.
