True Peak (dBTP)
01 — Definition
The real peak level of the analogue waveform once reconstructed — inter-sample peaks included, the ones that slip between two digital samples and can exceed the sample peak by 3 dB or more. It is measured with 4× oversampling. Broadcast limit: −1 dBTP. A file peaking at −0.1 dBFS on a sample meter can produce +2 dBTP true peaks, clipping the DAC or a downstream codec.
02 — In the field
Set your final limiter ceiling at −1 dBTP, not 0 dBFS. Lossy encoding (AAC, MP3) adds inter-sample overshoot: a true-peak-safe master survives transcoding without codec clipping.
