DMX Universe

01 — Definition

One complete DMX512 data stream, meaning 512 channels. As soon as a rig goes past 512 channels it needs several universes, each with its own physical output or its node/Art-Net mapping. Since modern moving heads swallow 30 to 40 channels each in extended mode, a single universe may hold only a dozen fixtures. Planning your universes — the patch — is what keeps you from running dry mid-build.

02 — In the field

Count the channels per fixture in the mode you will actually use, not the compressed mode. Sixteen moving heads in 32-channel mode already overflow one universe: plan the universe splits before you address, not after.
