sACN — Streaming ACN (E1.31)
01 — Definition
The standard that carries DMX512 data over IP networks, using UDP multicast. It scales to 63,999 universes and copes better than Art-Net on large installations, since multicast only sends data to subscribed devices. Its priority field (0 to 200) allows redundant sACN sources without conflict. The trade-off: it wants managed switches with IGMP snooping enabled for multicast.
02 — In the field
On an unmanaged switch, sACN multicast floods every port and can swamp devices that never asked for the traffic. On big rigs, stay on managed switches with IGMP snooping for sACN.
