HDCP — Content Protection
01 — Definition
High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection: the copy-protection (DRM) lock on HDMI and DisplayPort. Streaming services enforce HDCP 2.2 for 4K HDR, and the slightest non-compliant link in the chain — splitter, capture card, scaler — breaks the handshake and produces a black screen.
02 — In the field
A client laptop giving you a black screen on capture is almost always HDCP. A professional presentation switcher or scaler with HDCP negotiation settles it. Never use consumer HDMI splitters in a production signal path.
