01 — Definition
The delay between the moment a signal enters a system and the moment it comes back out. Sound travels at 343 m/s at 20 °C — 1 ms every 34 cm. Comb filtering sets in from as little as 1–5 ms of offset between two sources of the same signal. On in-ears live, under 10 ms is tolerable; Dante runs at 1 ms by default on a well-configured network.
02 — In the field
When FOH and in-ears share a console, monitor latency compensation changes the feel. On transient instruments — guitar, piano — performers notice latency from around 7 ms.
