LUT — Look-Up Table
01 — Definition
A file that remaps input colour and brightness values to output values, applied to a video signal to change its look. Technical (transform) LUTs convert between colour spaces or gammas — camera Log to Rec.709 for a correct display, for instance; creative (look) LUTs impose a graded aesthetic. A 3D LUT remaps the full colour cube (hue, saturation and luminance together), where a 1D LUT only bends the per-channel curves.
02 — In the field
Load a Log-to-Rec.709 LUT so a flat, washed-out camera Log feed reads correctly on the wall, and keep technical and creative LUTs in the right order. Applying a look LUT before the space/gamma transform bakes the wrong colour in permanently.
