VideoGLOSSARY

Gamma

01 — Definition

The non-linear relationship between input signal and displayed brightness, expressed as an exponent. SDR video is typically encoded to gamma 2.2 (Rec.709 uses a close variant). Raising gamma darkens the midtones, lowering it lifts them. A gamma mismatch between projector, LED wall and camera preview leaves content looking correct on one screen and muddy on another.

02 — In the field

Content perfect on the operator monitor but muddy on the LED wall? The wall's gamma is set higher than the reference. Set every display to the same gamma target (usually 2.2, or 2.4 for a dim room) before grading content.
