AudioGLOSSARY

Phantom Power (+48V)

01 — Definition

48V DC sent simultaneously down XLR pins 2 and 3 to power condenser microphones, up to 10 mA per channel. Balanced equally across both signal conductors, it stays transparent to correctly wired dynamic and ribbon mics. One absolute rule: never connect unbalanced equipment with phantom power active.

02 — In the field

Always mute the channel or pull the fader down before switching phantom power on or off. The transient thump on engagement can destroy tweeters if the system is already at show level.
