Shock Load
01 — Definition
A sudden dynamic force far exceeding the static weight, caused by a load being dropped, jerked, or caught in a fall. A shock load can multiply the static force several times over in an instant, potentially exceeding the WLL of a component rated well above the static weight. That is precisely why safety bonds must be short: a longer fall builds more shock load on arrest.
02 — In the field
A fixture on a slack safety bond builds a violent shock load as it drops and snaps taut — enough to shear a bond rated far above the fixture's static weight. Keep bonds short, and never subject rigging to snatch or jerk loads.
