CRI — Colour Rendering Index

01 — Definition

A 0 to 100 scale rating how faithfully a source renders colour against a reference. CRI 90+ is broadcast, film and fashion; 80 to 90 is fine for live events; below 80, skin tones turn grey-green and saturated colours wash out. R9 (saturated red) is the single most telling index — and it does not go into the headline CRI figure.

02 — In the field

When choosing LED fixtures for broadcast or close camera work, ask for the R9 value specifically. A fixture can show CRI 85 with an R9 of 0 — dreadful reds, which broadcast cameras give away immediately.
