Lighting
Key / Fill / Backlight
01 — Definition
Three-point lighting. The key, the primary source, sets the direction and lays the shadow; the fill softens those shadows from the opposite side, at lower intensity; the backlight separates the subject from the background, from behind and above. The key-to-fill ratio sets the mood: 4:1 for drama, 2:1 for news or corporate, with the backlight generally sitting at 50 to 75% of the key.
02 — In the field
The backlight is what gets forgotten most in live event lighting. Without it, performers drown into dark backgrounds on camera. Even a single PAR or wash fixture as a backlight lifts your IMAG quality dramatically.
