Dynamic vs Condenser Mic

The two great families of transducer. The dynamic — a coil on a diaphragm moving in a magnet — is rugged, needs no power and handles very high SPL, but resolves less detail in the high end: the workhorse for drums, guitar cabs and live vocals. The condenser — a charged diaphragm facing a backplate — needs phantom power, is more sensitive and detailed and tracks transients better, but is less tolerant of extreme SPL and moisture.
