VideoGLOSSARY

EOTF — Electro-Optical Transfer Function

01 — Definition

The function that turns encoded video code values into actual light output on screen. SDR follows a gamma curve (approximately 2.2–2.4); HDR goes through PQ (SMPTE ST 2084, absolute nits up to 10,000) or HLG (relative, backwards compatible). A mismatch between the content's EOTF and the EOTF set on the display gives washed-out or crushed images — the single most common HDR setup error.

02 — In the field

HDR content looking flat and grey? The display's EOTF has stayed on SDR gamma. Line the EOTF up (PQ, HLG or gamma) across the source, any processor and the display before trusting the picture: auto-detection via InfoFrame travels badly through matrices.
