IP Rating — Ingress Protection
01 — Definition
The two-digit classification of protection against solid particles and liquid ingress. The first digit (0 to 6) rates solids, the second (0 to 8) liquids. Some reference points: IP20 indoor only, IP44 indoor or covered outdoor, IP65 outdoor and rain-proof, IP67 rain and temporary immersion. For outdoor festival use in variable weather, IP65 is the minimum.
02 — In the field
IP44 will fail in sustained rain. Never assume an indoor fixture is outdoor-rated simply because it has been used outdoors before. Inspect the seals after every wet event: salt air at coastal venues degrades rubber seals faster than fresh water.
